Around 27 per cent of the premium pellets certified worldwide in 2023 were produced in Germany. This is according to the German Pellet Institute.
Germany leads in premium pellets
German manufacturers lead by far in the production of premium pellets, as the annual Pellet Report published by Bioenergy Europe shows, according to the German Pellets Institute (DEPI). According to the report, 3.7 million tonnes of the climate-friendly fuel left German plants last year, almost exclusively in the highest quality grade ENplus A1. Although 48.8 million tonnes were produced worldwide, only 13.7 million tonnes of these were certified. Germany consumed fewer pellets than it produced. It is therefore still a net exporter. ‘Germany is a forest country and therefore also a pellet country. We have a steady increase in wood,’ explains DEPI Managing Director Martin Bentele. It is obvious that the residues from the sawmill industry would be used for climate-friendly wood heat.
